Title: On Effective Numerical Methods for Phase-Field Models

Keynote Speaker: Qiao Zhonghua

Abstract:

In this talk, we overview our recent works on modern computational methods for the approximate solution of phase-field problems. The main difficulty for developing a numerical method for phase field equations is a severe stability restriction on the time step due to nonlinearity and high order differential terms. It is known that the phase field models satisfy a nonlinear stability relationship called gradient stability, usually expressed as a time-decreasing free-energy functional. This property has been used recently to derive numerical schemes that inherit the gradient stability. We will discuss implicit-explicit time discretization methods which satisfy the energy stability. A time-adaptive strategy will be presented for solving the phase-field problems. Several numerical results will be given.

Speaker Introduction:

Professor Qiao Zhonghua received his Ph.D. from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2006 and acted as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Hong Kong Baptist University from August 2008 to December 2011. He was engaged in postdoctoral research at Center for Science Engineering Computing Research, North Carolina State University, US from July 2006 to July 2008. He currently holds an office of an associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Working mainly on the design and analysis of algorithms for numerical differential equations, he has been focused on research on numerical simulation of phase-field equations and efficient algorithms for computational fluid dynamics in recent years. So far, he has published more than 40 papers in SCI journals, which have been cited for over 500 times. He was credited with the Outstanding Young Scholar Award 2013-2014 from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council in 2013 and the Young Scholar Award from the Hong Kong Mathematical Society in 2018.
