Title: Arnold Diffusion and Stability of the Solar System

Speaker: Cheng Chongqing

Abstract: Since the establishment of the Newtonian calculus, classical mechanics theory and the law of universal gravitation, the stability of the movement of celestial bodies has been concerned. Laplace and Poisson once "proved" the stability of the solar system. Nevertheless, the issue has not been finalized. The mathematical model of the solar system can be summarized as a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system. Arnold made a famous guess in the 1960s about the system, referred to as the Arnold diffusion guess. The occurrence of such diffusion in the solar system will indicate the instability of the solar system. The research status and latest advances about this issue will be presented in this report.

Introduction of Speaker: Cheng Chongqing, professor at Nanjing University. He was awarded The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 1996, honored the Distinguished Professor by the Minister of Education in 1999, won the second prize in the National Natural Science Award in 2001 (the first completer), and invited to give a 45-minute report at the 26th International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010.
