The Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Arieh Warshel, Was Appointed as the Part-Time Chair Professor in Shandong University

[The Station] On August 25, the appointment ceremony for Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Arieh Warshel, as the part-time chair professor, i.e. Seminar of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences was held in the center campus. The vice principal, Han Shenghao, in Shandong University was present in the appointment ceremony and issued the letter of appointment to Professor Arieh Warshel.

In the appointment ceremony, the dean in School of Mathematics, Chen Zengjing, introduced about the basic information of Professor Arieh Warshel and his excellent academic achievements in mathematics and interdisciplinary researches.

"School of Mathematics is a school of long history in Shandong University and one of the most important bases for advanced mathematics education and mathematics research", said Han Shenghao in his speech. Professor Arieh Warshel is a globally reputed scholar in chemistry and biochemistry, who has achieved top honors with his research. Meanwhile, he is also a pathfinder and practitioner who take active efforts to promote the interdisciplinary sciences in computation and deep collaboration and innovation of interdisciplinary sciences. Han Shenghao expressed his hope to carry out the collaboration with Professor Arieh Warshel in multiple fields, including mathematics, to improve the interdisciplinary development, and to promote the academic capability as a whole. Professor Arieh Warshel expressed his gratitude toward Shandong University for inviting and appointing him. "I will accelerate the collaboration with Shandong University in mathematics and its interdisciplinary development with other disciplines, and contribute my own strength to the disciplinary development and talent cultivation in Shandong University", said Professor Arieh Warshel.

Directors in relevant departments in the University, members of the Party and Administration teams in School of Mathematics and representatives of students and teachers participated in the appointment ceremony.

After the appointment ceremony, the scholars present in the ceremony held the Seminar of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences. Professor Liu Bingqiang made an academic report of the title, Bioinformatics Research: Mathematics and Life Science, and introduced the interdisciplinary research of mathematics and life science in Shandong University. The report is done from the development background of bioinformatics based on the requirements for mathematics during the process of big data in biomedicine, and emphatically introduces the application of network and combinatorial optimization in the relevant interdisciplinary researches of life science and its development potential as well as a series of achievements in the interdisciplinary researches for the gene expression and handling.

On August 26-27, Professor Arieh Warshel will leave for Qingdao Campus to hold an academic seminar and make a keynote speech of the title, Multistage Standard Simulation of Complicated Biological Behavior.

Arieh Warshel, Professor in University of Southern California, US, Nobel Prize Winner in 2013 and Member of National Academy of SciencesUnited States. Professor Arieh Warshel is a pioneer in the computer-simulation function of biological molecules, who has written about 440 dissertations of peer review and developed the computer programs used in molecule simulation. The programs have been used extensively in different fields, e.g. development of new medicine. Professor Arieh Warshel and his colleagues initiated the key approaches to the computer-simulation function of biological molecules, including the introduction of molecular dynamics into biology, developed the methods based on quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics, introduced the model of enzyme reaction, and initiated the microscopic model of electron-proton transfer in solution and protein, microscopic model of electrostatic effect in large molecules and the model of protein folding. Recently, he and his colleagues has interpreted the molecular origin under the effect of molecular mechanic vector.
