The School of Mathematics Stages a Symposium on Promoting Traditional-New Kinetic Energy Conversion

On the morning of Feb. 23, 2019, the "Symposium on the Promotion of Traditional-new Kinetic Energy Conversion via Mathematics of Shandong University" was held by the School of Mathematics. The symposium, presided over by Qu Mingjun, secretary of the Party Committee of the School, consisted of two parts: keynote speech and free discussion. Attendees include entrepreneur delegates, experts and professors from the School of Mathematics, and relevant comrades from Shandong Serving Office and the Department of Science and Technology Management, Shandong University.

At the symposium, Professor Chen Zengjing, dean of the School of Mathematics, had a detailed introduction to the history of mathematics. As he suggested, the mathematics of Shandong University has achieved globally leading results in several key frontier fields of fundamental mathematics and applied mathematics, and has accumulated numerous research outcome internationally renowned and influential. He hoped that this symposium would allow these advanced achievements to be better applied in various fields of national construction, initiating new ways of traditional-new kinetic energy conversion.

Wang Kezhao, the 1983 alumni of the School of Mathematics, chairman of Beijing RiseSoft Co., Ltd., member of the 11th Central Committee of the China Democratic National Construction Association, and the president of Zhongguancun Software and Information Service Industry Innovation Alliance, talked about the implementation of the artificial intelligence development plan. As he indicated, a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is sprouting. The formation of big data, the innovation of theoretical algorithms, and the improvement of computing power is pushing the artificial intelligence into a new development stage. The various models and algorithms based on mathematical principles will be the core driving force of "Made in China" and "Innovated in China", and "algorithm" will definitely become the major driver of the productivity growth.

Zhu Tao, deputy chief engineer of Information Center of China Railway Corporation, presented the achievements of "Smart Railway" and the problems encountered during the construction. According to Zhu, in spite of the advances in China railway informatization construction, many problems have lingered, affecting the overall efficiency and other aspects. He expected that the School of Mathematics of Shandong University could, by giving full play to her discipline advantages, provide new algorithms and construction ideas for the building of railway information systems, and offer advices for the construction of "smart railways".

He Chunchao, chairman of Zhonghairong Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the construction and operation of the National Science and Technology Finance Demonstration Zone to the School of Mathematics, expecting to have in-depth discussions and cooperation with the School of Mathematics and the Financial Research Institute in financial risk prevention and control, big data security governance, sci-tech finance and other fields.

Shi Yufeng, professor and doctoral supervisor at the Financial Research Institute of Shandong University, detailed the self-developed "programmed trading strategy intelligent generation system".

Tian Maosheng, general manager of Shandong Sundata Management Software Engineering Co., Ltd., and Xu Lejia, chairman of Qingdao Yourong Information Technology Co., Ltd., briefed their own sci-tech finance products that have been launched, as well as the application results and challenges.

In free discussion, professors of the School of Mathematics had targeted discussions about the practical issues mentioned by the above entrepreneurs, and identified the content and direction of mathematics-related work in the construction of "smart railway" and "sci-tech finance", high-end algorithmic training and so on.

This seminar aims to figure out how to promote the transformation between traditional and new kinetic energy through mathematics, explore a scientific path to transform the "algorithm" into veritable productivity, and make intelligence-contributions to the implementation of the strategy of "serving Shandong to promote nation-building".
